With only six days left until Nigeria and Nigerians mark the 60th independence anniversary, Nigerian musician Ibejii as put a pen to paper to write how he feels as the Afrobeats nation marks her diamond jubilee come October 1, 2020.
We hope it gets you thinking!
Nigeria is leaking – too many of our brightest young leaving for foreign pastures – greener, browner, better, uglier.
Nigeria is scattering – children, gone; parents, gone; aunties, abroad; uncles, travelled; cousins, unknown; nieces, unknown. Our nation is scattering. Scattered.
Our people are running away. They are running everywhere, anywhere. They just want out. They are done.
They don’t care where they go. Whether by visa or a desert mule, they go.
They go to be slaves in war zones. Our lawyers are cleaners in European cities. Our graduates are garbage collectors, bus drivers, morgue attendants, farm hands – in the most god awful places around the world.
Yet, our leaders, those who should guide and protect us, continue in mock ignorance – looting, raping, pillaging, mis-governing. Not a jot of self shame. Not a whiff of national shame.
Our nation is scattering. Scattered.
